AI Engineer (Maritime)

What you will do

• Work with Product Managers to refine customer problems into AI solutions with clear success criteria and evaluation plans.
• Prototype and evaluate LLM applications, agents, and retrieval pipelines before roadmap commitment.
• Design solution architectures covering model selection, orchestration, data access, guardrails, cost, and latency.
• Build offline and online evaluation suites, including production quality monitoring.
• Deliver production-ready code with tests, evaluations, documentation, and observability, then support handover to engineering teams.
• Build retrieval and embedding pipelines over inspection reports, vessel records, documents, and the hirify.global knowledge graph while contributing to responsible AI standards and team tooling.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 3+ years of hands-on AI/ML or software engineering experience, including production LLM-based applications.
• Strong Python and software engineering fundamentals, including testing, packaging, version control, code review, and CI.
• Experience building agentic systems and RAG pipelines with LangGraph and LangChain or similar, including tool use, state management, and structured outputs.
• Ability to work in an experimental environment with loosely defined requirements and determine what is worth building.
• Excellent communication skills, including explaining technical trade-offs to non-technical colleagues.
• Must have the right to live and work in London, UK.

Nice to have

• Experience designing and running LLM evaluations, including datasets, metrics, LLM-as-judge, regression testing, and production monitoring.
• Knowledge of embeddings, vector search, and hybrid retrieval.
• Experience deploying AI workloads on Azure, including Azure OpenAI, AI Foundry, Azure AI Search, Functions, or Container Apps.
• Experience with Databricks, MLflow, Delta Lake, or model serving.
• ML fundamentals and exposure to PyTorch or classical ML.
• Experience with multimodal models, document and image understanding, graph databases, or knowledge graphs.
• Experience in maritime, shipping, logistics, or another safety- or compliance-driven domain.
• Open-source contributions or a public portfolio of work.
