Director, Medicinal Chemistry

Location: Alameda, CA, United States; onsite office role

Base salary: $234,000–$295,500 per year

What you will do

• Lead and provide scientific direction to a medicinal chemistry team designing and synthesizing novel compounds for portfolio projects.
• Drive projects from target validation and chemical equity identification through lead optimization and drug candidate selection.
• Collaborate with biology, DMPK, safety, cross-functional project teams, and CRO partners to advance quality compounds.
• Supervise staff, including hiring, scheduling, work assignment, performance review, and personnel recommendations.
• Maintain laboratory notebooks, follow EH&S requirements, and promote laboratory safety.
• Prepare technical documents, patent applications, scientific manuscripts, and conference presentations.

Requirements

• Ph.D. and a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience managing direct reports and matrix teams, including projects or workgroups in biotechnology organizations and budget procedures.
• Proven delivery of projects from target identification through optimization to high-quality drug candidates, demonstrated through publications and/or patent applications.
• Knowledge of drug discovery, structure-based drug design, related disciplines, organic chemistry, and medicinal chemistry.
• Strong bench skills in modern synthetic chemistry, purification, analytical techniques, target compound design, and synthetic pathway design.
• Excellent problem-solving and SAR analysis skills, with extensive medicinal chemistry laboratory research and general chemistry equipment experience.
• Knowledge of intellectual property matters related to drug discovery and scientific literature and chemical/scientific databases.
• Experience with MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Excel; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to apply advanced scientific and technical principles, set priorities, initiate program efforts, exercise independent judgment, and work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
