Senior Vice President, Chemistry & CMC (Biotech)

Location: San Francisco, California, United States; on-site.

Salary: $270,000–$370,000 annually, plus discretionary bonus and equity incentive plan eligibility.

What you will do

• Own chemistry strategy and execution across the small-molecule portfolio, focusing on late-stage lead optimization, candidate quality, developability, and nomination criteria.
• Lead compound optimization using structural and mechanistic insights, pharmacology, DMPK, safety, physicochemical properties, synthetic tractability, and translational objectives.
• Drive development candidate selection, backup strategies, route scalability, formulation feasibility, and intellectual property assessment.
• Lead CMC strategy through IND-enabling studies and first-in-human readiness across drug substance, drug product, analytical development, and phase-appropriate controls.
• Oversee CROs and CDMOs, including partner selection, scopes of work, technical decisions, budgets, quality, risk mitigation, technology transfer, and milestone delivery.
• Build and mentor the internal chemistry organization, collaborate across scientific functions, expand the chemistry platform, and communicate progress to executive leadership, investors, and the Board.

Requirements

• PhD in chemistry or a closely related discipline.
• Approximately 15–20+ years of relevant pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry experience with significant progressive leadership responsibility.
• Track record of late-stage small-molecule lead optimization and successful development candidate nomination for an oncology indication, with direct accountability for advancing assets through IND-enabling studies.
• Strong medicinal chemistry expertise, including optimizing oral exposure of beyond-Rule-of-5 molecules.
• Substantive hands-on leadership of small-molecule CMC activities.
• Clear and persuasive communication skills, with the ability to operate strategically and hands-on in a resource-conscious, fast-moving biotech environment.
• Decisive, scientifically rigorous, collaborative, pragmatic leadership and the ability to challenge assumptions and develop talented people.
