TL;DR
Research Scientist, Life Sciences (Large Molecules, Process Development) (Biotech): Building and running antibody expression, purification, characterization, and formulation workflows that connect AI-generated sequences with experimental data, with an accent on biologics process development, manufacturability, and IND-enabling CMC. Focus on scaling protein production from high-throughput screening to gram quantities, evaluating stability and aggregation, and coordinating analytical methods, technology transfer, and external manufacturing.

Location: Fully on-site in the San Francisco Bay Area, United States

Annual salary: $300,000–$320,000 USD

Company

Anthropic builds reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems and applies AI to biological discovery through its Life Sciences team.

What you will do

  • Develop end-to-end expression, purification, and formulation processes for antibodies and other recombinant proteins using mammalian cells, affinity capture, chromatography, buffer exchange, and formulation.
  • Characterize proteins using analytical methods including SEC, CE-SDS, icIEF, LC-MS, DLS, thermal stability, endotoxin, SPR, and BLI.
  • Build and qualify a protein production laboratory with workflows scaling from plate-based production of hundreds of designs to gram quantities of a lead.
  • Evaluate AI-designed antibodies for titer, aggregation, stability, viscosity, chemical liabilities, and manufacturability, then feed experimental results back to research teams.
  • Plan the CMC path toward IND-enabling studies, including cell line development, scale-up, analytical methods, stability, technology transfer, and external manufacturing.
  • Document experimental data, batch records, methods, raw data, and failure modes, and communicate findings to biology, AI research, and life sciences audiences.

Requirements

  • PhD in biochemical engineering, chemical engineering, biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and manufacturing antibodies or other recombinant proteins, including material for IND-enabling or clinical studies, with recent, sustained hands-on laboratory work.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and define problems in a rapidly evolving research environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Minimum education is a bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience; the field of study must be relevant through coursework, training, or professional experience. Required experience correlates with internal job-level requirements.

Nice to have

  • 5+ years of biologics process development experience beyond the PhD.
  • Experience across upstream development, including cell line development and bioreactors, and downstream development, including chromatography and filtration, with working knowledge of analytical and formulation development.
  • Experience establishing protein production or process development laboratories, including laboratory automation and high-throughput plate-based expression and purification.
  • Experience directing technology transfer and GMP manufacturing at contract development and manufacturing organizations, with contributions to CMC sections of an IND.
  • Statistics or coding skills, such as design of experiments or Python for data analysis and automation.
  • Experience using AI or ML tools in the life sciences.
  • Publications and/or patents demonstrating scientific impact.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work as part of a collaborative research organization focused on large-scale AI and life sciences efforts.
  • Benefits include competitive compensation, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office collaboration space.
  • Anthropic currently expects staff to be in one of its offices at least 25% of the time, while this role specifically requires full-time on-site work in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Visa sponsorship is available, although sponsorship cannot be guaranteed for every role and candidate; immigration counsel supports the process.

Hiring process

  • Follow Anthropic’s policy on candidate AI usage during the application process.
  • Apply through confirmed Anthropic career openings and verify recruiter communications come from @anthropic.com or identified vetted recruiting agencies.
