TL;DR
Systems Engineer, Motion Controls Safety (Automotive): Developing safety analysis, fault-injection simulations, and performance requirements for autonomous vehicle motion planning and control systems with an accent on vehicle dynamics, degraded driving modes, and AI driving safety. Focus on defining system-level trade-offs, verifying requirements through SIL, HIL, and on-vehicle testing, and automating analysis with AI and LLM tools.
Location: Foster City, California, US; hybrid workplace
Company
Zoox develops a full-stack autonomous mobility solution and robotaxi system for urban deployment.
What you will do
Perform safety analysis and define performance requirements for motion planning and control systems across expanding operational design domains, environmental conditions, and degraded driving modes.
Build and extend fault-injection simulations to determine vehicle fault detection and response requirements for new operational domains and next-generation platforms.
Support simulation pipelines for verifying AI driving safety and define requirements for their vehicle dynamics models.
Collaborate with software, hardware, verification, and validation teams to confirm requirements through SIL, HIL, and on-vehicle testing.
Use AI and LLM tools to accelerate analysis and automate repetitive processes.
Requirements
Master’s degree or higher in Robotics, Automotive, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with 4+ years of relevant experience.
Hands-on experience developing vehicle motion control systems.
Experience building or using simulations to analyze vehicle dynamic behavior and inform motion control requirements.
Strong analytical skills in quantitative analysis and modeling, performance-metric definition, and system-level trade-off analysis.
Excellent technical communication and documentation skills, with demonstrated success working cross-functionally in complex technical environments.
Nice to have
Experience developing autonomous vehicles or similarly complex robotics systems.
Familiarity with requirements management tools such as Polarion or DOORS.
Experience with vehicle dynamics modeling and simulation-based safety verification.
Familiarity with ISO 26262, ISO 21448, and other industry safety standards.
Culture & Benefits
Full-time hybrid role within the System Design and Mission Assurance organization.
Transparent, respectful culture with strong leadership and cross-functional collaboration.
