Material Estimator, Specialist (Defense Tech)

Location: San Diego, California, United States; onsite, with a 9/80 schedule totaling 80 hours over 9 of every 14 days and every other Friday off.

Salary: $69,500–$129,500 per year in California; final compensation may vary based on experience and geographic location.

What you will do

• Review and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), supplier quotations, RFP responses, and material cost data.
• Develop ROM and firm proposal estimates, cost models, templates, and pricing analyses using Microsoft Excel.
• Collaborate with Proposal, Program Management, Supply Chain, and Engineering teams to validate assumptions, identify cost risks, and support cost-reduction strategies.
• Maintain traceability and data integrity across estimates, proposals, supplier records, and estimating tools for CPSR and DCMA audit readiness.
• Execute procurement from requisition through purchase order closeout, including delivery-date maintenance and vendor relationship management.
• Track variances and historical pricing trends to improve the accuracy and competitiveness of future estimates.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Finance, Industrial Engineering, or a related field and at least 4 years of experience in material estimating, procurement, or supply chain analysis; or a graduate degree and at least 2 years of related experience; or at least 8 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis tools.
• Experience reading and interpreting BOMs and supplier quotations.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills with attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced proposal environment.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams across multiple sites.

Nice to have

• Experience supporting government or defense proposal environments; FAR/DFARS familiarity is a plus.
• Understanding of cost analysis principles and proposal pricing structures.
• Experience with ERP systems such as SAP or Infor LN and procurement databases.
