Backend Developers (Java/Kotlin)

Location: Fully remote contract role for people based in Romania

hirify.global builds fare collection and ticketing platforms for public transport, including the Justride platform used by transit agencies and millions of riders worldwide.

What you will do

• Build and maintain backend services and APIs powering core Justride functionality.
• Design and contribute to scalable, secure, resilient distributed systems.
• Build integrations with internal services and third-party systems.
• Collaborate with engineers, testers, and product partners to deliver features from concept through production.
• Write tested, maintainable code, participate in reviews, and contribute to engineering standards and technical direction.
• Monitor and improve service performance, reliability, and observability while supporting team outcomes.

Requirements

• Based in Romania and able to work in a fully remote contract role.
• Clear, confident written and spoken English.
• Solid commercial experience building backend systems in Java or Kotlin.
• Understanding of distributed systems and designing for scale and reliability.
• Experience designing and working with REST APIs and service-based or event-driven architectures.
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, ideally AWS.
• Thoughtful approach to code quality, testing, and maintainability.
• Collaborative approach, strong problem-solving skills, proactive mindset, and ability to explain technical ideas to technical and non-technical colleagues.

Nice to have

• Event-driven architecture, RESTful APIs, AWS services such as DynamoDB, S3, SQS, EC2, and ECS, Kafka, Terraform, Grafana, Gradle, Maven, and Git.
