Software Engineering Senior Advisor (Ruby on Rails)

Location: United States Work at Home; remote work requires cable broadband or fiber optic internet with at least 10 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload.

Annual salary: $130,200–$217,000, depending on experience and geographic location; eligible for an annual bonus plan.

What you will do

• Set the technical direction for backend applications, APIs, and services primarily built with Ruby on Rails and Node.js.
• Design scalable, highly available, reliable, maintainable, and high-performance solutions.
• Translate business needs into technical plans with engineers, product leaders, and cross-functional partners.
• Provide hands-on leadership through coding, design reviews, code reviews, pairing, and practical feedback.
• Define engineering standards, guide AWS cloud architecture and container-based CI/CD deployment practices, and use production data to improve system health.
• Coach engineers and support knowledge sharing, experimentation, and team growth.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of experience as a development lead, principal-level engineer, architect, or senior individual contributor.
• Proficiency with Ruby on Rails, including API design and object-relational mapping.
• Experience designing and supporting scalable, highly available web services and backend applications.
• Experience setting technical standards and guiding engineering decisions across teams.
• Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
• Experience with AWS or another cloud infrastructure platform.
• Working knowledge of Unix command-line tools for application support and maintenance.
• Experience with Agile delivery methods such as Scrum or Kanban and constructive code review practices.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills in a cross-functional environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with Node.js and modern JavaScript.
• Experience with Docker, AWS ECS or ECR, and GitLab CI or another CI/CD platform.
• Experience with Jira and Confluence.
• Experience with pair programming and mentoring engineers.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field.
