Sr. Director of Engineering - API (AI)

Location: Hybrid in Reston, VA or Somerville, MA; full remote may be considered. The role is associated with offices in the United States.

What you will do

• Define and lead the API-first platform strategy, including service design, versioning, discoverability, reliability, performance, and governance standards.
• Lead Model Context Protocol (MCP) strategy and implementation, including service exposure, tool discovery, agent-to-service communication, and context-aware interactions.
• Design and deliver semantic, agent-ready APIs with documentation, schemas, and semantic models optimized for developers and AI systems.
• Define context management and runtime patterns, including retrieval, caching, session and state management, and memory-aware service interactions.
• Build foundational frameworks and reusable components while partnering with Architecture, AI, Data, product, engineering, Google, and other vendors.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership and mentorship and drive adoption of API and MCP standards across engineering teams.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience.
• Experience operating at Principal Engineer or Staff+ level.
• Strong hands-on experience building distributed systems.
• Experience designing and building API-first platforms.
• Experience with cloud-native architectures; GCP is preferred.
• Experience building developer platforms or service-oriented architectures.
• Strong system design and architectural thinking skills.
• Proven ability to lead cross-team technical initiatives.

Nice to have

• Hands-on work with Google Cloud Platform.
• Familiarity with Vertex AI Agent Engine.
• Background in ADK and reasoning frameworks such as LangChain.
• Understanding of the Model Context Protocol.
• Exposure to BigQuery and Snowflake.
• Knowledge of Apigee or similar API gateway solutions.
• Experience designing semantic APIs for AI or agent-driven use cases.
• Experience managing context or building memory systems.
• Experience developing agent-based architectures or orchestration frameworks.
• Exposure to Anti-Gravity.
