Backend Engineer (Rust/Minecraft)

Location: Fully remote; employment is currently available in Germany, the UK, Republic of Ireland, Austria, Canada, and the USA. Fixed-term contractor arrangements are available outside these employment countries.

Salary: €52,000–€60,320 gross per annum for 40 hours per week as an employee; rates and benefits differ by local currency.

hirify.global develops Modrinth, a community-built Minecraft modding platform, including the Modrinth App and broader Modrinth platform.

What you will do

• Contribute to the design and delivery of backend projects.
• Write reliable, well-tested, and maintainable code.
• Review code and incorporate feedback from other engineers.
• Collaborate on implementation details and technical direction.
• Identify and address issues and bottlenecks in assigned areas.
• Support the long-term health of the Modrinth App and Modrinth API.

Requirements

• Deep knowledge of the Minecraft modding ecosystem.
• Strong experience with async Rust backends, including Tokio and SQLx.
• Strong SQL knowledge, including SQLite, PostgreSQL, schema design, and query optimization.
• Experience building desktop applications with Tauri or Electron.
• 3+ years of software engineering experience.
• Self-directed problem-solving skills and the ability to work without being told what to do.
• Ability to distill complex problems using first-principles thinking.
• Active use of AI to work faster without outsourcing understanding of the code.
• Applicants must be older than 18.

Nice to have

• Experience building or working on a client or launcher, personally or professionally.
• Familiarity with Vue, Nuxt, and TypeScript.
• Familiarity with DevOps and Kubernetes, including Helm, Ansible, and CI/CD tools.
