Staff Software Engineer, Code Search (AI)

Location: Remote, United States

Base salary: USD $140,400.00–$372,300.00 per year; certain roles may also include benefits, annual bonus, stock, and sales incentives according to the applicable plan.

What you will do

• Design, prototype, implement, test, ship, and support high-performance, globally scalable lexical and semantic code search technology through the Blackbird search engine.
• Integrate Blackbird with AI agents and develop AI-powered software development workflows for hirify.global Copilot products, including Cloud Agent, Code Review, Copilot CLI, and VS Code.
• Design and implement APIs and maintain reliable integration across hirify.global services, downstream dependencies, partner teams, and organizations.
• Provide technical leadership through architecture proposals, code experiments, mentorship, pairing, code reviews, and technical roadmap development.
• Own system health and operational quality, participate in first-responder on-call rotations and live incidents, and use debugging tools and telemetry to resolve issues and optimize performance.
• Work autonomously with engineers, designers, and partner teams to define constraints, communicate plans, and consistently deliver products, features, and bug fixes.

Requirements

• At least 9 years of experience in software engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline with experience maintaining and delivering production software, including coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python; equivalent experience is also accepted.
• Alternatively, an Associate’s Degree in a listed related field and at least 8 years of relevant experience; or a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field and at least 7 years; or a Master’s Degree in a listed related field and at least 5 years; or a Doctorate in a listed related field and at least 3 years.
• Ability to work autonomously, learn quickly, communicate clearly, and set technical direction.
• Experience collaborating with engineering, design, and partner teams to deliver maintainable production systems.

Nice to have

• Experience building or operating web-scale search, information retrieval, or context retrieval systems.
• Expertise with systems programming languages, ideally Rust.
• Experience designing or integrating AI/ML-powered features into production systems.
• Experience solving problems with large-scale distributed systems.
