Senior Hardware Engineer: High Speed Mixed Signal Designer (Quantum Computing)

Location: Hybrid in Boulder, CO or Austin, TX; office attendance required at least 3 days per week.

Base salary: $140,000–$160,000 annually, plus annual bonus and company equity.

What you will do

• Design system architectures for quantum-control instruments, including analog and RF front ends, signal conditioning, amplification, DACs, ADCs, power, clocking, control, and monitoring.
• Research, simulate, prototype, evaluate, and design high-speed mixed-signal front ends for laser and actuator interfaces.
• Define hardware requirements with software, quantum, laser, optical, and systems engineers.
• Design schematics and PCBs in Altium Designer, working with a PCB layout designer.
• Bring up, verify, test, and debug control-system hardware with FPGA, firmware, and software engineers.

Requirements

• BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, plus 5+ years of relevant postgraduate professional experience in board-level analog and digital circuit design.
• At least one complete hardware design cycle, from concept development and schematic capture through PCB layout, fabrication, and initial board bring-up.
• Mixed-signal design experience and working knowledge of PCB design best practices with strong attention to detail.
• Proficiency with electronic test equipment, including oscilloscopes, spectrum and logic analyzers, and signal generators, for prototype bring-up and debugging.
• Experience with complex IC boards, such as FPGAs or processors, requiring multiple power supplies, high-speed buses, and high-speed memory interfaces.
• Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with experimental physicists, hardware engineers, and software engineers.
• Self-motivated, collaborative, and effective in a fast-growing startup environment.

Nice to have

• RF design concepts or software-defined radio experience.
• Experience designing and characterizing high-speed data-converter systems for low phase noise, low spurious content, and high linearity.
• Experience with multi-gigabit serial transceiver lanes, including design, evaluation, and equalization, plus IBIS-AMI modeling and correlation.
• Experience designing high-speed memory interfaces and high-speed digital and analog I/O, including connector and cable selection and characterization.
• Python or another scripting language for data acquisition, instrument control, and automated hardware testing and characterization.
• Experience in a Linux environment and familiarity with MicroTCA, PXIe, or similar pluggable instrument standards.
