Senior Backend Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote, US or Canada

Salary: $192,000–$246,000 annually for Zone 2 locations; $213,000–$246,000 annually for New York and San Francisco.

What you will do

• Lead the scoping, design, and delivery of backend services, data models, and asynchronous pipelines in Python on AWS.
• Build and scale LLM-based systems that process large volumes of unstructured documents and data with precision and explainability.
• Design external-facing APIs and integrations with third-party systems used in customer workflows.
• Own database and query performance, manage technical debt, and contribute to product-wide architectural decisions.
• Lead incident and bug resolution, adopt development, testing, and deployment best practices, and help estimate and deliver work reliably.
• Mentor engineers through code review, pairing, and design feedback while using AI tooling to improve output and quality.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience building and operating backend systems in production.
• Strong Python knowledge; strong candidates from other object-oriented backgrounds are also considered.
• Experience with AWS, serverless technologies including Lambda and Step Functions, asynchronous workflows, and cloud environments.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases and performance tuning, ideally PostgreSQL.
• Mastery of system design, debugging, testing, and problem-solving fundamentals.
• Experience building external-facing APIs or designing integrations with third-party systems.
• Ability to take full ownership, drive projects to completion with minimal oversight, communicate proactively, and keep stakeholders informed.
• Comfort with experimentation, measuring results, iterating quickly, and solving problems that have not been effectively solved before.

Nice to have

• Experience with LLMs in production and deploying them at scale.
• Experience with document pipelines and processing large amounts of data.
• Experience with distributed systems.
• Experience in insurance, fintech, or another data-heavy regulated domain.
