TL;DR
Staff Process Engineer (Fusion Energy): Designing and commissioning process systems for commercially viable fusion power plants with an accent on cryogenics, power generation, molten salts, gas processing, vacuum systems, and utilities. Focus on developing process design bases, modeling and sizing equipment, leading HAZOPs, supporting start-up, and troubleshooting operating systems.
Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States; on-site. The role requires occasional travel or work at night, on weekends, or on-call, including travel to suppliers, contractors, or operating facilities.
Salary: $152,000–$230,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.
Company
hirify.global is developing commercially viable fusion power plants and building the future fusion-energy industry.
What you will do
Own process engineering scopes for complex, semi-ambiguous systems from early concept through engineering, construction, commissioning, and operation.
Develop process design bases, operating envelopes, PFDs, heat and material balances, utility balances, P&IDs, process datasheets, and control philosophies.
Apply chemical engineering fundamentals and steady-state or dynamic process models to define system architecture, operating boundaries, and equipment selection.
Size, specify, and evaluate equipment with suppliers, fabricators, EPC organizations, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Lead HAZOPs, design reviews, relief and depressurization studies, commissioning plans, test procedures, start-up strategies, and performance testing.
Troubleshoot operating equipment using first-principles engineering and field data, manage project risks, drive solutions, and mentor less-experienced engineers.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
10+ years of relevant industrial process engineering experience, potentially fewer with a PhD, or equivalent demonstrated depth of experience.
Deep domain or broad cross-domain expertise, with the ability to independently own complex, semi-ambiguous work.
Strong chemical engineering fundamentals and experience taking systems through structured FEL or phase-gated development.
Experience scaling loosely defined process requirements into commercial-scale equipment and facilities.
Expertise with process design bases, PFDs, P&IDs, heat and material balances, industrial equipment sizing and selection, commissioning, operation, and troubleshooting.
Proficiency with process simulation tools such as EcoSim, Aspen HYSYS/Plus, or AVEVA, and experience with ASME B31.3, ASME BPVC Section VIII, API 520/521, and related industry standards.
Strong process safety, hazard identification, risk analysis, HAZOP, and relief-system design experience; ability to integrate disciplines and work with vendors, EPC organizations, or construction contractors.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally; perform stooping, climbing, typing, standing, and extended sitting; work hands-on in industrial, construction, commissioning, and operating environments; and comply with export control laws.
Nice to have
Experience with large-scale cryogenic systems, especially supercritical or liquid helium, and industrial high-vacuum systems.
Background in power generation, petrochemical, LNG, industrial gas, nuclear, or other large-scale process facilities.
Expertise in steam, molten salt, industrial gas processing, fueling, cooling water, chilled water, compressed or instrument air, and nitrogen utilities.
Experience scaling first-of-a-kind technologies from pilot or demonstration scale to commercial operation, dynamic process simulation, or consequence analysis.
Professional Engineer license.
Culture & Benefits
Values include integrity, execution, impact, self-critique, safety, and diverse perspectives.
Equity, competitive compensation, health, dental, and vision insurance, and a 401(k) with employer matching.
Thirteen company-wide holidays, flexible vacation days, ten sick days, and generous parental leave.
Professional growth opportunities and team-building activities.
Work may involve heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage and current, pressure and vacuum systems, hazardous materials, and cryogenics.
