Mechanical Engineer (Fusion Energy)

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States; on-site. The role requires partial second-shift coverage and occasional nights, weekends, on-call work, or travel.

Salary: $107,000–$160,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Provide technical expertise for commissioning, implementation, integration, and startup of manufacturing equipment.
• Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), troubleshoot mechanical issues, and implement solutions.
• Collaborate with production, engineering, vendors, and suppliers to improve equipment performance, delivery, efficiency, quality, and safety.
• Drive continuous improvement, conduct root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to reduce downtime.
• Conceptualize and detail manufacturing equipment for scaled-up processes, run feasibility experiments, and translate findings into practical designs.
• Create and maintain P&IDs, apply GD&T principles, and ensure compliance with safety requirements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience focused on manufacturing equipment, including 3+ years designing manufacturing equipment and tooling.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, including hydraulics, pneumatics, and motion control.
• Experience with 3D CAD packages, 2D drawings, FAT, SAT, commissioning, and startup of manufacturing equipment.
• Understanding of GD&T and its application.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across functions.
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs and perform extended periods of typing, standing, stooping, and sitting.
• Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights, weekends, or on-call shifts.
• Dedication to mitigating safety hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics.
• Employment is contingent on compliance with U.S. Export Control Laws concerning controlled or protected technologies and information.

Nice to have

• Experience with production ramp-up and optimization of manufacturing processes.
• Experience with automated equipment and robotics.
• Strong knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, and motion control.
