Automation and Test Engineer (Photonics)

Location: Ottawa, Canada; work includes the lab and manufacturing floor.

Salary: $110,000–$150,000 CAD per year, with potential annual bonus, equity, and health and welfare benefits.

What you will do

• Own automation projects from requirements definition through design review, implementation, documentation, and manufacturing deployment.
• Build test and process automation integrating motion stages, power supplies, fiber-optic and laser sources, optical and electrical instruments, cameras, and vision systems.
• Develop machine vision and inspection automation for manufacturing.
• Develop data acquisition and analytics layers that convert measurements into engineering and production insight.
• Extend, modernize, and maintain existing software.
• Collaborate with design, process, manufacturing, and production teams, communicating requirements, designs, and results clearly.

Requirements

• Degree in engineering physics, electrical engineering, or a similar field.
• 5+ years of experience in automation, test, or software engineering in a hardware environment.
• Strong programming fundamentals and comfort working with C#/.NET on Windows; Python is used for Linux-based backend services, automation, and analytics.
• Ability to run projects with minimal direction by interpreting specifications, asking relevant questions, defining criteria, and delivering results.
• Hands-on experience with instruments, motion systems, fiber, cabling, and signals, including patience to troubleshoot problems outside the code.
• Understanding of production requirements including uptime, throughput, repeatability, and production reliability.

Nice to have

• Device physics understanding.
• Fiber optics and photonics experience; optics can be learned by a strong engineer.
