Staff Software Engineer

Location: Remote within the United States; an in-person interview may be required during the hiring process.

Salary: USD $101,167–$204,439 per year, depending on state, experience, skills, and location. In California, the typical hiring range is $137,523–$191,004.

What you will do

• Provide technical leadership and direction for multiple agile teams and projects delivering prioritized software product roadmaps.
• Design, develop, and maintain complex distributed application systems that are modular, configurable, reusable, secure, scalable, and maintainable.
• Write high-quality code with strong test coverage and lead design and code reviews across multiple applications.
• Lead sprint teams, remove delivery impediments, and collaborate with product managers, stakeholders, and other engineering teams.
• Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance across multiple teams.
• Estimate effort, prioritize work, plan delivery, and drive technical strategy and vision for multiple teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 7+ years of software engineering experience with proven experience in cutting-edge technologies and/or technologies used at Mercury.
• 3+ years of hands-on experience leading multi-team engineering initiatives in a distributed application systems environment.
• Proficiency in one or more industry-standard programming languages, such as Java, Python, Go, C++, or JavaScript.
• Proficiency with data structures, algorithms, design patterns, relational databases, NoSQL, and caching solutions.
• Experience with REST and gRPC APIs; message queuing, data streaming, workflow, and integration frameworks such as Apache Kafka, Apache NiFi, Amazon SQS, MS MQ, or Apache Camel.
• Knowledge of microservices architecture, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.
• Experience with DevSecOps, analytics data, experimentation, observability, and operational excellence.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, collaboration, influence, leadership, mentoring, and technical strategy skills.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Computer Science.
• Experience building distributed services with Java, Python, Spring Boot, and microservices architectures.
• Hands-on experience with Apache Airflow and message-queuing technologies for workflow orchestration and event-driven systems.
• Strong understanding of cloud technologies, containerization, and deploying or supporting containerized services.
• Experience with data structures, API design and integration, integration frameworks, metadata stores, and schema registries.
• Experience driving automation through AI.
