Senior Product Counsel (AI)

Location: In-person in San Francisco, California, United States.

What you will do

• Serve as embedded counsel to AI and R&D teams throughout product design, model development, and launch.
• Advise on health data, including HIPAA, HITECH, business associate arrangements, de-identification, model training and evaluation, and state privacy and consent laws.
• Assess AI-specific risks involving training data provenance and licensing, model and API terms, output accuracy, clinical decision support, FDA software boundaries, intellectual property, and transparency.
• Draft and negotiate data licenses, model and infrastructure provider agreements, research and clinical collaborations, BAAs, DPAs, evaluation agreements, and pilot agreements.
• Build legal intake and review processes, launch checklists, playbooks, self-service guidance, and training for engineering and product teams.
• Partner with Privacy, Security, Regulatory, Clinical, Trust & Safety, and Marketing teams while tracking AI and health data regulation.

Requirements

• J.D. and active membership in the California bar, or eligibility to register as in-house counsel in California.
• An attorney licensed in any U.S. jurisdiction and eligible to obtain RHIC may alternatively be considered; California Bar membership is preferred.
• Approximately 10+ years of legal experience, including meaningful in-house experience supporting a technology, digital health, or healthcare organization.
• Demonstrated product counsel experience embedded with engineering and product teams and advising on features in development.
• Healthcare data fluency covering HIPAA, business associate relationships, de-identification standards, and practical work with PHI.
• Digital health, health IT, or provider-facing experience is strongly preferred.
• Working knowledge of AI and machine-learning legal issues, including training data rights, model licensing, output liability, evaluation and monitoring, and emerging AI regulation.
• Hands-on facility with AI tools and technical curiosity to engage substantively with model builders.
• Comfort with ambiguity, practical risk-calibrated advice, and product-speed decision-making.
• Clear, concise written communication and the ability to make legal complexity actionable for technical audiences.
