Software Development Manager (AI)

Location: Hybrid, Manchester office at least 2 days per week

Salary: £50,000–£60,000 per year

What you will do

• Lead, mentor and support software developers through one-to-ones, performance reviews, career development and clear objectives.
• Coordinate development teams around priorities, commitments and business objectives while monitoring progress, risks, dependencies and delivery challenges.
• Facilitate collaboration between developers, technical leads, Product Management, Engineering, Quality Assurance and other stakeholders.
• Plan team capacity, balance workloads, manage competing priorities and identify resource constraints and capability gaps.
• Promote scalable and sustainable software development practices, continuous improvement, automation and AI-assisted development tools.
• Communicate progress, challenges and priorities and contribute to departmental planning and organisational change.

Requirements

• Proven experience leading or managing software development teams.
• Strong people management skills, including coaching, mentoring, performance management and employee development.
• Experience coordinating engineering activities, managing competing priorities, resource planning and capacity management.
• Ability to establish clear expectations, promote accountability and support consistent team performance.
• Good understanding of software development methodologies, Agile practices and modern engineering environments.
• Strong organisational, problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to support teams through organisational and technological change.
• Supportive, approachable and trustworthy leadership style, with ownership, accountability, proactivity and adaptability.

Nice to have

• Experience working in SaaS or cloud-based software environments.
• Familiarity with Microsoft .NET and Azure technologies.
• Understanding of AI-assisted software development and engineering automation.
• Experience introducing process improvements that increase team productivity and effectiveness.
• Experience working with multidisciplinary teams in a product-focused organisation.
