Applications Engineer – Exterior Systems Design & Release (Automotive)

Location: Dearborn, Michigan, United States. Hybrid work environment with four days per week in the office; onsite work at the work location address. Occasional domestic travel to supplier manufacturing facilities and vehicle assembly plants may be required.

What you will do

• Lead the design, development, validation, and release of exterior vehicle components, including bumpers, fascias, grilles, active grille shutters, battery trays, wheel arch liners, and underbody shields.
• Evaluate system feasibility and deliver components meeting quality, cost, weight, manufacturing, assembly, durability, performance, and timing targets.
• Coordinate with Studio, Program Management, Manufacturing, Suppliers, Supplier Technical Assistance teams, and assembly plants.
• Develop Engineering Statements of Work and Engineering Concepts, support sourcing, cost reviews, supplier selection, and technical design reviews.
• Release and maintain parts through BOM tools, WERS, change control, and prototype and production BOM processes.
• Coordinate validation, durability, functional testing, prototype builds, launch activities, quality investigations, and sign-off processes.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related engineering field.
• At least 3 years of experience in automotive exterior systems development or related engineering roles.
• Experience with Class-A surface development and Studio interface activities.
• Experience with Teamcenter Engineering, CATIA, 3DX, CAD systems, and parametric modeling.
• Knowledge of exterior systems design, packaging requirements, craftsmanship standards, and benchmarking.
• Understanding of automotive manufacturing processes related to exterior components.
• Ability to resolve complex engineering and packaging challenges.
• Strong technical communication, presentation, and negotiation skills, together with effective project, meeting, and time management skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Nice to have

• Experience with AVBOM and Release Engineering processes.
• Experience working within the automotive industry and vehicle launch environments.
• Master’s degree in a related engineering discipline.
