Software App S/W Engr SMTS (Embedded Systems)

Location: Onsite required at the Cambridge, Massachusetts office, United States. Candidates must be available to work from the Cambridge office and obtain and maintain a US government security clearance.

Base salary: $82,300.00–$220,000.00 per year.

What you will do

• Develop embedded real-time avionics software for resource-constrained targets and resilient, fault-tolerant systems across undersea, terrestrial, air, hypersonic, and space applications.
• Execute the full software development lifecycle, from requirements and design through testing, deployment, and field support.
• Design algorithms, analyze performance and functionality, and develop software tests to verify requirements compliance.
• Contribute to system architecture decisions, lead subsystem architecture, and drive solutions to complex technical problems.
• Communicate with customers and stakeholders, prepare technical documentation, and support requirements and design reviews.
• Identify technical risks, develop mitigation strategies, mentor less experienced staff, and lead a small software development team.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or an equivalent field and at least 5 years of software engineering experience.
• Experience developing embedded software with RISC-V, UltraScale+ ARM processors, or other low-power microcontrollers such as PowerPC or TMS320.
• Experience with real-time operating systems such as VxWorks, Integrity, embedded Linux, Zephyr, or FreeRTOS.
• Proficiency in C, C++, and assembly programming, with strong embedded-target development and troubleshooting skills.
• Knowledge of OS coding techniques, interfaces, hardware subsystems, driver development, device drivers, board support packages, and boot code.
• Knowledge of embedded system buses and protocols, including CAN, I2C, SPI, Serial, SpaceWire, or 1553.
• Knowledge of software configuration management, defect tracking, and peer review processes.
• Experience with in-circuit emulators, JTAG debuggers, and laboratory test equipment.
• Experience developing formal requirements, design and test documentation, and supporting formal reviews.
• Ability to learn programming languages and technologies quickly, communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, and manage competing tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or an equivalent field.
• Expertise with development tools such as GCC and LLVM, static and dynamic analysis tools, and QEMU-based development.
• Experience with safety-critical systems and industry standards such as DO-178C.
• Prior experience developing real-time operating systems.
