Paralegal (Insurance Defense)

Location: Remote within the United States; role listed in California, US. An in-person interview may be required during the hiring process.

Salary: USD $56,701–$102,219 annually; in California, the typical hiring range is $71,514–$87,406.

What you will do

• Support house counsel with pre-trial tasks, legal research, fact investigation, client correspondence, and claim case preparation.
• Draft responses to discovery, letters, pleadings, briefs, motions, appeals, affidavits, reports, and other legal documents.
• Search, assemble, summarize, and evaluate information and evidence from claims files, depositions, medical records, statutes, case law, and other sources.
• Prepare, format, file, and maintain court documents, discovery materials, digital case files, and case management records.
• Assist attorneys with trial preparation, including exhibits, trial books, motions in limine, expert witness lists, statements of the case, and other trial documents.
• Assist insured parties in small claims cases by preparing trial briefs, researching relevant information, attending trials, and supporting the company’s defense.

Requirements

• One of the following minimum education and experience pathways is required: an ABA-approved paralegal program certificate; a qualifying paralegal program or postsecondary degree with at least 24 semester units in law-related courses; a bachelor’s or advanced degree plus at least one year of law-related experience under qualifying attorney supervision and a written declaration; or a high school diploma/GED plus at least three years of law-related experience under qualifying attorney supervision and a written declaration.
• 0–2 years of insurance defense paralegal experience and/or equivalent insurance defense litigation experience.
• General knowledge of legal principles, terminology, and procedures.
• Ability to draft and proofread legal documents supporting or responding to discovery, depositions, and motions.
• Ability to work in a paperless environment and correspond effectively with clients, attorneys, claims personnel, and other parties.
• Knowledge and proficiency with word-processing and case-management software.
• Ability to prioritize and reprioritize assignments and complete work promptly and logically.
• Completion of required continuing education hours in compliance with state rules.

Nice to have

• Degree in paralegal studies and/or a paralegal certificate.
• 1+ year of insurance defense or civil litigation experience.
• 1–2+ years of paralegal experience in civil litigation or insurance defense.
• Excellent written, verbal, and grammatical communication skills for drafting motions, oppositions, and replies.
