Engineering Manager - Energy

What you will do

• Co-lead an autonomous energy squad with a Product Manager in collaboration with UX and Data colleagues.
• Own technical decisions, guide design discussions, and align engineering practices with company and technical strategy.
• Set team objectives and OKRs, drive prioritisation, manage risks and blockers, and communicate progress to stakeholders.
• Drive operational excellence by improving security, service-level objectives, on-call coverage, metrics, and system performance.
• Hire, onboard, coach, develop, and support engineers through performance calibration and promotion reviews.
• Build domain knowledge, communicate strategy, resolve team conflicts, manage budgets, and represent the squad to senior leadership.

Requirements

• Knowledge of gRPC, GraphQL, React, Kafka, Docker, and Kubernetes; Go experience is preferred but not essential.
• Experience leading technical design processes, facilitating design discussions, and representing a team in cross-functional technical conversations.
• Ability to evaluate options and trade-offs, resolve disagreements, document technical decisions, validate architecture against real-world edge cases, and align decisions with product and engineering strategy.
• Strong understanding of engineering best practices, including security and service-level objectives, with the ability to drive operational excellence and lead metrics reviews.
• Hands-on experience with AI development tools.
• Experience defining team goals, driving prioritisation, setting OKRs with Product Managers, and co-leading annual and quarterly planning.
• Experience identifying and mitigating risks early and improving delivery predictability by sequencing or reducing scope.
• Experience managing engineers and onboarding, training, developing, and coaching reports, including participation in performance calibration and promotion reviews.
• Intermediate awareness of customer and market insights, experience communicating strategy, and ability to build deep domain knowledge beyond the happy path.
• Experience working in complex, multi-variant domains such as billing, pricing, identity, or claims, where intricate logical edge cases are critical.
• Experience fostering healthy team dynamics, resolving interpersonal conflicts, and collaborating with cross-functional colleagues.
