Staff Product Engineer (Backend) (Fintech)

Location: Fully remote; candidates must be based in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, or the Dominican Republic.

Salary: Chile $137K–$170K; Brazil and Colombia $130K–$165K; Dominican Republic $97K–$113K.

What you will do

• Lead high-impact projects on the Financial Operations team, including payments and transaction systems integrating with Stripe, LayerFi, and Cherry.
• Work across middleware and backend architecture, GraphQL schemas, APIs, and data models.
• Ramp up on FinOps workflows, backend architecture, and release practices, then contribute as a primary individual contributor.
• Lead projects from design and architecture review through cross-functional collaboration, launch, and production-ready milestones.
• Develop technical proposals, defend architectural decisions, and guide implementation across the company.
• Own engineering initiatives involving testing standards, SDLC automation, documentation, code review, or related engineering culture practices.

Requirements

• 8–12 years of backend engineering experience, including senior- or staff-level experience leading large initiatives and influencing architecture across teams.
• Staff-level backend experience as a hands-on individual contributor leading large, ambiguous initiatives with ownership of scope, delivery, and tradeoffs.
• Experience building and shipping financial, payments, or transaction systems where money movement and correctness are critical.
• Strong judgment in backend and API design, including middleware, GraphQL schemas, APIs, and data models, with the ability to explain design choices and tradeoffs.
• A record of making and defending major architectural decisions while balancing speed, quality, and long-term maintainability.
• Experience establishing or maturing engineering standards such as unit testing, code review, documentation, or SDLC automation.
• Ability to partner closely with Product, Design, and engineering peers, unblock complex cross-team decisions, and communicate status, risks, and tradeoffs clearly.
• Daily fluency with AI tooling for software development and a point of view on improving the software development lifecycle with AI.

Nice to have

• Opinions and experience with AI harnesses, tools such as Ghosty, Herdr, Pi, or Plannotator, and multi-agent workflows and processes.
