Staff+ Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote; Minneapolis, Minnesota, US

Salary: $150,000–$200,000 per year

What you will do

• Identify valuable user and market problems through user conversations, support data, and product signals.
• Take ideas from zero to one by prototyping, launching early versions, validating traction, and owning outcomes through production.
• Define success measures, use evidence from real users, and decide whether to improve, expand, or stop initiatives.
• Build AI-enabled tools, context, checks, and feedback loops that improve engineering delivery speed and quality.
• Make architecture, quality, security, safety, and product tradeoffs when requirements are incomplete.
• Work across product and engineering boundaries, contributing across APIs, web, mobile, infrastructure, and core platform areas while helping other engineers adopt effective practices.

Requirements

• Staff-level impact as a hands-on engineer, including shaping technical direction, building important systems, and helping others deliver stronger work.
• Experience starting and carrying an initiative through an unstructured early phase, such as a product, feature, internal tool, open-source project, or company, until it found users or was shown not to be viable.
• Ability to move from an uncertain problem to a useful result through prototypes and recognize when stronger engineering is needed for production.
• Product judgment and curiosity about users and markets, including explaining problem selection, collaboration, and impact on users or the business.
• Practical fluency with AI-assisted development using models or agents to build real software or workflows, including evaluating results and understanding limitations.
• Strong judgment about architecture, quality, security, and user experience.
• Depth in at least one engineering area and the fundamentals to work effectively across the stack.
• Low ego, high integrity, and a habit of making reasoning visible so others can learn and improve.

Nice to have

• Experience from a product company, small team, open-source project, or a non-conventional career path.
• Experience with AI or agents, including evaluating delegated work and improving an approach after it falls short.
• A documented failed experiment and the judgment gained from it.
