Principal Data Engineer (AI/ML)

Location: Hybrid in Westbrook, Maine, United States, with a minimum expectation of 2 days onsite per week.

Salary: Starting at $130,000 annual salary, with an opportunity for an annual cash bonus if applicable.

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain fault-tolerant production data pipelines in Databricks and dbt Core using medallion architecture and SCD2 patterns.
• Own delivery of roadmap components and partner with Data Science and MLE colleagues to provide the data required for AI model development.
• Write and review production code, tests, and documentation, and establish standards that other engineers can build on.
• Troubleshoot pipeline failures and data quality issues while developing monitoring and alerting.
• Contribute to Snowflake integration, including federated connections and source-system history tracking.
• Mentor junior and mid-level data engineers, review pull requests, pair on complex problems, triage Jira tickets, participate in interviews, and improve team standards for testing, deployment, and documentation.

Requirements

• 7+ years of production experience in data engineering or a closely related field.
• Strong SQL and Python skills with hands-on dbt experience.
• Experience with a modern cloud data platform; Databricks and/or Snowflake are strongly preferred.
• Experience with CI/CD, GitHub version control, and automated testing for data pipelines.
• Experience mentoring or reviewing the work of junior and mid-level engineers.
• Experience working directly with Data Science, MLE, or other technical partners to understand data needs.
• Good judgment about when to escalate, make decisions independently, or ask for help.

Nice to have

• Experience in healthcare, life sciences, or another regulated data environment.
• Experience with AI/ML training pipelines or close collaboration with Data Science or MLE teams.
• Familiarity with medallion architecture, SCD2 patterns, or similar data modeling conventions.
• A track record of proposing and driving improvements to engineering practices or tooling.
