Payroll Specialist (US & International Payroll)

Location: Fully remote; role covers US payroll and international payroll through EOR partners.

Salary: $90,000–$110,000 per year.

What you will do

• Own end-to-end bi-weekly and semi-monthly payroll for all ShieldCos, including inputs, approvals, funding, reconciliation, off-cycle runs, bonuses, commissions, retroactive pay, final pay, and corrections.
• Manage multi-state payroll taxes, garnishments, special deductions, payroll filings, amendments, agency notices, year-end processing, and payroll journal entries.
• Manage international payroll through EOR partners, including payroll inputs, registers, invoices, employer costs, FX, statutory requirements, onboarding, offboarding, and employee pay questions.
• Set up payroll for new ShieldCos, including entities, EINs, state tax registrations, banking, funding, GL mapping, controls, approvals, and segregation of duties.
• Administer payroll-facing benefits and retirement processes, including deductions, 401(k), HSA/FSA, commuter programs, COBRA handoffs, carrier reconciliations, and plan reporting.
• Maintain leave-related payroll treatment, Rippling data integrity, system integrations, employment and income verifications, documentation, calendars, and standard operating procedures.

Requirements

• 5+ years of hands-on payroll experience, ideally across multiple entities or EINs.
• Experience managing international payroll through HRIS/EOR providers or in-country payroll vendors; Rippling experience is strongly preferred.
• Working knowledge of multi-state payroll tax, garnishments, pre-tax and post-tax deductions, statutory benefits, 13th-month pay, social contributions, and country-specific termination rules.
• Hands-on experience with a major payroll or HRIS platform.
• Strong reconciliation skills and comfort with Excel, including lookups, pivot tables, and variance analysis.
• Experience with year-end processing, payroll tax filings, and payroll audits.
• Working knowledge of benefits deductions, 401(k) administration, FMLA, and state leave pay treatment.
• Clear, patient communication skills with the ability to explain pay to employees and managers in plain terms.
• High attention to detail and discretion with confidential pay, medical, and personal data; comfort with ambiguity and documenting processes.
