Editorial Director, Nature Research Journals, Life Sciences

Location: New York or Berlin; permanent full-time role with hybrid office working policy.

US annualized base salary: $170,000–$190,000, plus eligibility for an annual performance-related bonus plan.

What you will do

• Lead, motivate, and inspire Chief Editors and editorial teams to deliver high-quality journals and a best-in-class author experience.
• Drive the strategic growth, development, management, and performance of a portfolio of thematically connected life sciences research journals.
• Use data analytics, market intelligence, performance metrics, and research-community insights to guide journal development, strategic decisions, investment priorities, and business growth.
• Improve workflows and adopt new approaches and tools to strengthen journal activity, operational efficiency, and author services.
• Build effective relationships across Nature Portfolio and hirify.global, manage conflicts, align stakeholders, and advance shared objectives.
• Coach Chief Editors in leadership, talent development, and succession planning while promoting inclusion, engagement, high performance, and organizational capability.

Requirements

• Significant experience in scientific, academic, or scholarly publishing, with an understanding of the research publishing landscape.
• Leadership experience in a scientific or academic publishing environment, including leading managers and high-performing teams and developing future leaders.
• Experience shaping the strategy, growth, and performance of journals or publishing portfolios while balancing scientific excellence and organizational objectives.
• Strong understanding of the research community and the evolving needs of researchers, institutions, funders, and other stakeholders.
• Proven ability to attract, develop, and retain talent while fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performance culture.
• Strong analytical skills and experience using data, market insights, and performance metrics to inform decisions and drive outcomes.
• Experience identifying opportunities for innovation, portfolio development, and sustainable growth, supported by sound business and strategic judgment.
• Excellent communication, influencing, and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to build relationships across a complex organization.
• Sound judgment, resilience, and confidence in leading through ambiguity, managing competing priorities, and making difficult decisions.
• An advanced degree.
