TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer (Nuclear): Designing and analyzing mechanical and electromechanical systems for DOE and commercial nuclear applications, including advanced, small modular, fusion, and fuel-processing reactors, with an accent on SolidWorks, DFM, GD&T, and ANSYS-based structural, thermal, and stress analysis. Focus on decomposing customer and regulatory requirements into manufacturable designs, preparing nuclear design documentation, and providing technical leadership for complex engineering projects.

Location: US - Huntsville, AL. Onsite role requiring US citizenship and the ability to attain and maintain a government security clearance. Approximately 10% domestic and international travel required; availability during evenings and weekends may be necessary.

Company

hirify.global, part of Teledyne Technologies, develops high-reliability technologies for industrial, aerospace, defense, environmental, electronics, oceanographic, energy, medical, and pharmaceutical markets.

What you will do

  • Research, plan, design, analyze, fabricate, install, and support mechanical and electromechanical products and systems.
  • Design systems and equipment for DOE and commercial nuclear markets, including advanced reactors, small modular reactors, fusion reactors, and nuclear fuel processing.
  • Decompose customer and regulatory requirements into manufacturable designs and verify and validate compliance.
  • Create SolidWorks 3D models, design drawings, shop drawings, and designs for manufacture using GD&T.
  • Perform kinematic, kinetic, stress, structural, thermal, hydraulic, and heat-transfer analyses using hand calculations, FEA, ANSYS, and, as applicable, Adams multibody dynamics software.
  • Prepare and review design basis documents, system design descriptions, procurement specifications, proposals, estimates, reports, white papers, calculations, and ASME NQA-1 documentation; coordinate with systems engineering, manufacturing, testing, customers, and project leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 5–10 years of directly related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • US citizenship and ability to attain and maintain a government security clearance.
  • Proficiency with 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks and experience preparing hand calculations and thermal, stress, and structural analyses using ANSYS or an equivalent FEA tool.
  • Ability to apply systems engineering principles, including INCOSE, DOD 5000, or ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, DFM, mechanical design, system interfaces, fabrication, testing, installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Strong technical writing skills and ability to prepare and review technical reports, specifications, design documentation, and calculations.
  • Ability to apply trigonometry, calculus, statistics, probability, geometry, and engineering judgment to design, analysis, and problem solving.
  • Knowledge of software for analytical results and presentations, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Basic knowledge of ISO and/or AS9100; working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and Kaizen.
  • Ability to collaborate with customers, managers, systems and design engineers, manufacturing, testing, and other personnel, and to provide technical leadership to lower-level engineers when required.

Nice to have

  • Active Professional Engineering License.
  • Experience working within the nuclear industry.
  • Experience with Adams by Hexagon or equivalent multibody dynamics simulation software for kinematic and kinetic analysis.
  • Working knowledge of ASME NQA-1.
  • ASME VIII Certifying Engineer and/or Section III, Appendix XXIII Certifying Engineer qualification.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work on high-reliability technologies supporting industrial, government, commercial nuclear, aerospace, defense, and other advanced technology markets.
  • Operate in an environment emphasizing ethics, integrity, safety, quality, innovation, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Follow applicable import/export requirements, safety and security procedures, PPE requirements, and company policies.
  • Equal opportunity employment is provided in accordance with applicable law.
