TL;DR
Controls Engineer, Vehicle Controls (EV): Developing, validating, and debugging supervisory control algorithms for medium-duty electric and hybrid vehicle platforms with an accent on model-based design, diagnostics, and vehicle integration. Focus on building Simulink/Stateflow models, executing MIL testing, analyzing CAN data, and resolving control issues found in testing and customer fleets.

Location: Garden Grove, California, United States; hands-on vehicle testing at test sites and customer locations, including occasional travel.

Salary: $120,000–$160,000 USD annually.

Company

hirify.global develops commercial electric vehicle and hybrid platforms for medium-duty vehicles.

What you will do

  • Develop, maintain, and improve MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow control algorithms for vehicle state management, charging, thermal management, drive modes, torque arbitration, energy management, diagnostics, and fault reactions.
  • Translate system requirements into software requirements, maintain traceability, and develop and execute model-in-the-loop test cases and test harnesses.
  • Build CI pipelines for model checks, code generation, and regression testing; generate production code and review generated C code with embedded software engineers.
  • Develop and integrate OBD/UDS diagnostic functions, including DTCs, fault detection and debounce, fault reactions, and DIDs; verify diagnostics with Vector tools.
  • Calibrate parameters and debug behavior on bench, HIL, and vehicles using CAN logs and Vector CANalyzer, CANape, and vSignalyzer.
  • Perform root-cause analysis on vehicle and fleet issues, support vehicle testing and integration, review models and modeling guidelines, and collaborate with systems, calibration, embedded software, and test engineers.

Requirements

  • 2–5 years of experience developing automotive or vehicle control software using model-based design.
  • Strong hands-on proficiency with MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow for control algorithm development and debugging.
  • Experience applying PID control, LQR/optimal control, and Kalman filtering or state estimation to real systems.
  • Experience writing software requirements and developing and executing MIL test cases.
  • Working knowledge of C, including reading and debugging auto-generated or hand-written embedded code.
  • Experience with CAN communication, DBC files, and CAN log analysis using Vector CANalyzer, CANape, and/or vSignalyzer.
  • Experience calibrating control parameters on bench or vehicle, including CANape with XCP and A2L files.
  • Understanding of control systems fundamentals and vehicle systems such as powertrain, high-voltage battery, inverter/motor, or vehicle state management.
  • Experience with Git and structured software development processes; strong problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills.
  • Comfort working hands-on with vehicles and safely around high-voltage systems; a valid driver's license and willingness to travel occasionally are required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, Mechatronics, or Controls Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

  • Experience with EV or hybrid supervisory controls, energy management, or powertrain controls.
  • Experience with SAE J1939, commercial vehicle networks, OBD, UDS, DTCs, DIDs, CDD, ODX/PDX, and Vector CANdelaStudio.
  • Familiarity with AUTOSAR and tools including Vector DaVinci, Simulink AUTOSAR Blockset, Embedded Coder, Simulink Test, Model Advisor, and Polyspace.
  • Experience with SIL/HIL testing using dSPACE, NI, or Vector VT System.
  • Experience building CI pipelines for model-based development with Jenkins, GitLab CI, or MATLAB CI/CD tools.
  • Familiarity with SAE J1772, CCS, ISO 15118, ISO 26262, ASPICE, requirements management tools, MATLAB scripting, Python, or CAPL.
  • Experience analyzing field or fleet data and resolving customer issues; a master's degree in Controls, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Culture & Benefits

  • Early-stage startup environment focused on commercial electric vehicles and hybrids.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage with 100% employee coverage.
  • Early-stage stock options and retirement savings with 401(k), HSA, and FSA.
  • Paid time off, parental leave, and an annual vacation bonus.
