Industrial Designer II (Hardware)

Location: Boston, Massachusetts; hybrid work with strong preference for onsite collaboration Tuesday through Thursday.

Salary: $86,300–$115,000 annual base pay.

What you will do

• Translate customer needs and user insights into compelling product concepts, forms, and physical experiences.
• Build rapid physical prototypes and foam models to test ideas, validate ergonomics, and gather user feedback.
• Collaborate with Product Management, Engineering, User Research, and UX from early exploration through execution.
• Explore form, color, material, finish, and user interactions through collaborative sketching.
• Create detailed CAD models, 3D renderings, design drawings, CMF specifications, production artwork, and part review documentation.
• Partner with engineering and external manufacturing partners to resolve DFM issues, maintain design integrity through production, and evolve the hardware Design Language System.

Requirements

• 3–6 years of professional hardware design experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design or equivalent.
• Proven experience designing high-quality consumer products that integrate physical and digital components.
• Strong digital portfolio demonstrating end-to-end design work, including early concepting, user-centered problem solving, form development, and rapid prototyping.
• Strong storytelling, collaboration, growth-oriented mindset, attention to detail, and appreciation for aesthetics.
• Excellent ideation, form-giving, CAD, digital prototyping, hand sketching, and digital sketching skills.
• Experience with rapid physical prototyping using paper, foam, and 3D printing to test concepts with users and validate design direction.
• High proficiency in 3D CAD modeling for precise surface geometries and expertise in presentation-quality 3D rendering and visualization using KeyShot and V-Ray.
• Understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and CMF specification documentation; ability to collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineering and manufacturing partners while managing trade-offs and preserving design intent.
• Experience working within or contributing to a hardware Design Language System.
