Backup & Storage Engineer

Location: On-site in Edinburgh (preferred) or Luton, United Kingdom; full-time, shift-based. Security clearance eligibility is required: candidates must be sole UK nationals and must have lived and worked continuously in the UK for the past ten years; dual nationals cannot be considered.

What you will do

• Monitor and validate daily backup operations across more than 200 servers and multiple platforms.
• Investigate and resolve backup failures, restore service, and follow up on daily backup reports.
• Manage incidents, problems, and changes in line with ITIL processes, collaborating with colleagues, customers, and technical teams.
• Perform root cause analysis, recommend longer-term solutions, and manage hardware support calls with vendors.
• Maintain backup and storage hardware platforms, supporting availability, capacity, reliability, and performance.
• Develop backup strategies and recovery procedures, improve operational processes, and introduce automation where appropriate.

Requirements

• Eligibility for security clearance, sole UK nationality, and continuous residence and work in the UK for the past ten years are required; dual nationals cannot be considered.
• Knowledge of backup and recovery technologies, data protection, and service continuity.
• Experience with Veritas NetBackup, ideally including versions up to 11 relevant to the customer environment.
• Knowledge of enterprise storage technologies, particularly NetApp and Dell EMC.
• Ability to learn new technologies and adapt to tools and frameworks supporting automation and efficient service delivery.
• Practical problem-solving skills, including investigating issues and finding effective workarounds.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills with colleagues, customers, and technical teams.
• Proactive ownership, commitment to resolving issues, and the ability to manage priorities in a shift-based operational environment.

Nice to have

• Basic understanding of Microsoft Windows, Red Hat Linux, Solaris, and VMS.
