Director, News

Location: Utica, New York, United States; onsite at the downtown Utica station.

Salary: $45,000–$55,000 per year.

What you will do

• Lead and supervise all aspects of news, weather, and sports programming production.
• Manage the News Department, including staffing, training, performance evaluations, hiring, promotions, and terminations.
• Develop news coverage strategies for the station and its website.
• Critique daily newscasts, correct errors, and provide mentoring feedback to news staff.
• Assign projects, monitor deadlines, respond to coverage questions, and coordinate with senior station leaders on station goals.
• Determine programming and equipment needs and support achievement of viewer rating goals.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
• Fluency in English.
• At least five years of experience in news programming production, including at least two years in a leadership role; requirements may vary by market size.
• Experience guiding, directing, and motivating subordinates, setting performance standards, and monitoring performance.
• Experience establishing long-range objectives and defining the strategies and actions needed to achieve them.
• Ability to identify developmental needs and coach, mentor, or otherwise help others improve their knowledge or skills.
• Experience preparing and maintaining departmental budgets.
• Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines, and other office equipment.
• Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, listen effectively, understand employee needs, and communicate with a team to shape solutions.
