Staff Software Engineer (PostgreSQL)

Location: Full-time in-office attendance at the Mountain View, CA or McLean, VA offices, five days per week.

Annual base salary: $174,000–$229,000 USD for the U.S. pay range; $194,000–$253,000 USD for Mountain View, CA.

What you will do

• Lead the engineering, evolution, and operational excellence of the PostgreSQL-based data platform across CloudSQL, AlloyDB, and AWS RDS.
• Optimize PostgreSQL internals, high-throughput queries, indexing, partitioning, connection management, permissions, and database hygiene.
• Build automated schema change pipelines, DDL validation, migration checks, lock and timeout guardrails, and developer self-service tooling.
• Architect large-scale data migrations, major PostgreSQL upgrades, zero-downtime changes, and platform transitions.
• Develop database observability, diagnostics, telemetry, alerting, logical replication, CDC, and outbox or streaming integrations.
• Establish database security, compliance, access-control, retention, migration-review, and engineering best practices while mentoring engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of professional software development and data infrastructure experience, including 5+ years working deeply with PostgreSQL in high-volume production environments.
• Deep hands-on knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, including MVCC, vacuuming, locking semantics, query execution plans, indexing structures, WAL, and replication.
• Strong programming proficiency in one or more backend languages: Go, Python, Ruby, or Java.
• Expert-level SQL and PL/pgSQL proficiency.

Nice to have

• Experience building software, automation, and CI/CD pipelines for safe database schema changes, migrations, and developer guardrails, including Liquibase, Flyway, custom DDL linters, or zero-downtime migration tooling.
• Experience managing and upgrading managed cloud PostgreSQL platforms at scale, including GCP CloudSQL, Google AlloyDB, AWS RDS, or Aurora PostgreSQL.
• Experience executing near-zero-downtime PostgreSQL upgrades and multi-terabyte table migrations or normalizations under strict availability SLAs.
• Experience with PostgreSQL extensions, custom statistics and diagnostics tooling, logical replication, and CDC pipelines such as Debezium, pglogical, Airbyte, Pub/Sub, or Kafka.
• Experience automating database infrastructure and lifecycle management with Terraform, Kubernetes, or Helm.
• Understanding of data security, encryption, role-based access control, and compliance requirements in regulated environments, including FedRAMP, NIST, or GDPR.
• Fluency with AI-assisted engineering tools and workflows for tooling development, query analysis, and migration validation.
• Experience turning database knowledge into self-service tools, documentation, and paved paths for other engineers.
