TL;DR
PostgreSQL Database Consultant (PostgreSQL/database reliability): Stabilizing and tuning large self-managed PostgreSQL environments for enterprise clients with an accent on vacuum, indexing, configuration, replication, backup recovery, and monitoring. Focus on diagnosing production incidents, performing root cause analysis, preventing recurrence, and building reliable operational practices for critical data platforms.

Location: Remote, candidates must be located in and authorized to work in the United States; the role requires travel averaging 3–5 days per quarter.

Salary: $120,000–$190,000 annually, depending on experience, plus annual bonus opportunity.

Company

hirify.global partners with companies to build outcome-focused applications, infrastructure, and data platforms through consulting, architecture, development, documentation, testing, and deployment.

What you will do

  • Audit PostgreSQL configuration, maintenance, and indexing across enterprise environments and identify root causes of instability.
  • Tune vacuum strategy, indexes, queries, and database configuration to improve performance and reliability under production load.
  • Implement monitoring, alerting, runbooks, and maintenance procedures that help prevent outages and enable client teams to respond effectively.
  • Consult with clients to design outcome-focused platforms, identify risks and unknowns, and guide delivery.
  • Travel for an average of 3–5 days every quarter, teach through conferences, training, meetups, and technical content, and collaborate with clients and engineers.

Requirements

  • Deep production experience administering PostgreSQL on self-managed, on-premise infrastructure, not only managed services.
  • Expert knowledge of vacuum and autovacuum, including threshold and cost-limit tuning, table and index bloat remediation, and transaction ID wraparound prevention.
  • Strong indexing expertise across B-tree, GIN, GiST, BRIN, partial, and covering indexes, including identifying missing, unused, and duplicate indexes and rebuilding indexes safely in production.
  • Mastery of PostgreSQL configuration, including memory, connection limits, checkpoints, WAL, and planner parameters, with the ability to audit and justify configuration changes.
  • Query performance analysis using EXPLAIN with ANALYZE and BUFFERS, pg_stat_statements, and pg_stat_* views.
  • Experience with streaming and logical replication, high availability tools such as Patroni or repmgr, and failover testing.
  • Backup, restore, and point-in-time recovery experience using pgBackRest, Barman, or similar, including regular restore validation.
  • Experience with connection pooling using PgBouncer or Pgpool-II, monitoring and alerting for PostgreSQL, and Linux administration related to database hosts.
  • Incident response and root cause analysis experience, including clear postmortems and remediation plans.
  • Ability to consult with clients, communicate findings to engineers and stakeholders, and travel as required.

Nice to have

  • Configuration management for database fleets using Ansible or similar.
  • Experience writing runbooks and maintenance procedures, capacity planning, performance baselining, major version upgrades, and low-downtime schema migrations.
  • Experience with change management in large regulated enterprises.
  • Security hardening experience with roles and privileges, pg_hba, TLS, and pgAudit.
  • Experience running PostgreSQL on Kubernetes using CloudNativePG, Crunchy Postgres Operator, or similar.
  • Scripting and automation with Python, Bash, or Go.
  • Experience with Oracle, SQL Server, or MySQL.

Culture & Benefits

  • Completely remote work with flexible hours.
  • Collaborative environment with peer support through the ask-help Slack channel.
  • Opportunities to develop skills, improve developer tools, and work on varied projects.
  • Competitive salary, annual bonus opportunity, 401(k) matching, and four weeks of paid time off plus eight paid holidays.
  • Health, dental, vision, maternity and paternity leave, short-term and long-term disability, and life insurance coverage.
  • Support for conferences, training, meetups, local groups, and technical content creation.

Hiring process

  • Submit a resume or LinkedIn profile and answer additional application questions.
  • Employment offers are contingent on passing a background check.
  • Recruiter submissions are not accepted; visa sponsorship is unavailable.
