Defence Reporter

Location: Hybrid, London, Greater London, United Kingdom; travel to national and international defence exhibitions and conferences is required.

What you will do

• Generate, pitch, report, and publish accurate breaking news and original exclusives for the defence desk’s sites and digital magazine.
• Build and maintain sources across the defence industry, including senior officials, military leaders, programme executives, and subject-matter experts.
• Cover defence acquisition and capability decisions end-to-end, explaining their drivers, implications, and operational or market impact.
• Produce explainers, analysis, longer-form features, investigations, live blogs, rapid updates, and daily newsletter content.
• Use documents, open-source methods, data, and interviews to develop high-impact stories while meeting legal and editorial standards.
• Collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief and defence desk to plan coverage, refine angles, and improve story presentation.

Requirements

• Strong journalism background with previous experience in a similar role.
• Experience in the defence or related industries is preferred.
• Ability to break news and deliver exclusives through source-building, persistence, and strong reporting judgement.
• Experience using programme documents, open sources, data, and cross-checking to validate claims and build defensible stories.
• Careful handling of sensitive information and a sound understanding of verification, attribution, and risk.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent is preferred.
• Native or near-native English speaker.
