Backend Engineer (Java, PIX)

Location: Brazil; remote-first, work-from-home arrangement, which may vary depending on the role and team.

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable Java and Spring Boot backend services for PIX payment integrations and related payment flows in Brazil.
• Implement payment initiation, transaction status management, reconciliation, exception handling, webhook processing, and payment failure recovery.
• Integrate with Brazilian banks, payment service providers, and external financial systems through APIs and other integration mechanisms.
• Build reliable, high-performance systems with transaction consistency, idempotency, fault tolerance, availability, scalability, and efficiency.
• Troubleshoot production issues, investigate root causes, monitor performance, and improve system stability.
• Collaborate with product managers, QA engineers, DevOps, and engineering teams from development through production deployment; participate in code reviews and engineering best practices.

Requirements

• Strong hands-on backend development experience with Java, preferably using Spring Boot and related frameworks.
• Solid understanding of RESTful APIs, microservices architecture, distributed systems, and database design.
• Experience with relational databases and SQL.
• Strong understanding of concurrency, transaction management, error handling, and performance optimization.
• Experience building and maintaining production systems, independently investigating technical issues, and delivering practical solutions.
• Familiarity with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, Git, and production monitoring tools.
• Strong problem-solving skills, ownership, hands-on coding, debugging, and operational troubleshooting abilities.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, cross-functional engineering environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with PIX, Brazilian payment systems, Brazilian banks, or local payment service providers.
• Experience in payment processing, fintech, banking, digital wallets, or other transaction-intensive systems.
• Familiarity with payment reconciliation, webhook processing, transaction lifecycle management, and payment failure recovery.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, containerization, Kubernetes, and observability tools.
• Understanding of payment security, fraud prevention, and financial regulatory requirements.
