Staff Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in San Carlos, California, with 3+ days per week onsite and remote work on the remaining days. All work must be performed in the United States. Only U.S. Persons may be hired; visa sponsorship and visa transfers are not available.

Base salary: $224,000–$260,000 annually at L6, plus equity and bonus opportunities.

What you will do

• Design, build, and deploy robotic and embedded software for advanced pilot assistance systems in production.
• Own autonomy features and subsystems from concept through deployment, delivering reliable and performant 0-to-1 functionality.
• Write, review, and maintain Python and C++ code across autonomy, systems, and embedded components.
• Integrate software with hardware, sensors, and perception or data ingestion pipelines for autonomous and operator-in-the-loop decision-making.
• Optimize edge compute software for CPU/GPU usage and latency, and implement safety mechanisms and fail-safes.
• Lead testing, validation, and deployment; mentor engineers and contribute to technical direction through design and code reviews.

Requirements

• 9+ years of experience designing and deploying robotic software and/or embedded systems in production environments.
• Strong software engineering skills in C++ and/or Python, including systems-level or embedded programming.
• Experience building real-time or interactive systems that support users making time-sensitive decisions.
• Familiarity with autonomy systems such as planning, decision-making, or reasoning, integrated with perception or sensor pipelines.
• Hands-on experience with embedded or edge compute platforms and debugging hardware/software interactions.
• Proven ability to deliver complex systems end-to-end in fast-moving and ambiguous environments.

Nice to have

• Experience with safety-critical or mission-critical systems, including aviation or robotics.
• Familiarity with ROS or DDS.
• Experience supporting human operators in the loop, simulation environments, or real-time control systems.
• Background in advanced mobility, autonomy, and robotics.
