Senior / Staff Backend Engineer (AI Search)

Location: Fully remote; hiring in the US, UK, Canada, Europe, Switzerland, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, and South Africa.

Compensation: Up to $185k per year, regardless of location.

What you will do

• Build AI-assisted answers into search, from retrieval and prompting through evaluation and rollout.
• Own backend work end to end, including design, implementation, deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
• Work across backend services written in Perl, Go, and Node.js.
• Set up and run evaluation frameworks to measure changes to models and prompts.
• Make product and technical tradeoffs and communicate them clearly.
• Mentor senior engineers and improve engineering practices.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience building backend systems that power a user-facing product.
• Hands-on experience with AI agent tooling, including evaluation frameworks, RAG pipelines, and prompt engineering.
• Fundamental understanding of complex data structures and algorithms.
• Strong proficiency in at least one of Perl, Go, or Node.js, with willingness to work across all three.
• Experience mentoring senior engineers.
• Good product acumen and the ability to understand user needs and make tradeoffs.
• Clear written and spoken communication and the ability to work effectively in a distributed team.
• Experience owning systems end to end.
