Staff Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States; other location: Bellevue, Washington. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer-sponsored immigration support. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Annual salary: $143,000–$286,000 in Sunnyvale; $132,000–$264,000 in Bellevue. Additional performance bonuses and, for certain positions, stock may be included.

What you will do

• Act as a technical lead for multiple business- and technology-driven projects with small to medium-sized teams.
• Design, develop, and deliver new functionalities and user experiences using scalable, secure, and efficient architectures.
• Guide engineers in building secure REST services with Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Kafka, Kubernetes, Maven, and cloud technologies.
• Drive availability, quality, performance, resiliency, developer productivity, and engineering effectiveness.
• Collaborate with Product, Business, Operations, UX/UI, and partner teams to understand requirements and deliver software products.
• Troubleshoot business and production issues, perform root cause analysis, create action plans, document findings, and lead technical design discussions.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience building complex architectures, distributed systems, and microservices.
• Expert-level knowledge of Java technologies, SQL and NoSQL databases, distributed caching, Kafka or other event-streaming platforms, and container technologies.
• Experience with code reviews, testing, documentation, clean code practices, and disciplined software development.
• Strong desire to continuously improve and adopt current capabilities in Kubernetes, Java, and Spring Boot.
• Ability to translate requirements into project plans in an agile environment.
• Experience partnering with cross-functional teams to solve business problems and deliver customer experiences.
• Collaborative leadership style, technical leadership, mentoring, and effective communication with peers and stakeholders.
• Either a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area plus 4 years of software engineering experience, or 6 years of software engineering experience.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with BigQuery and Cloud Bigtable.
• Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area plus 2 years of software engineering experience.
• Knowledge of inclusive digital experiences, WCAG 2.2 AA, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility best practices.
