Hardware Tools Engineer (AI)

Location: Mountain View, California, or remote; occasional travel a few times per year. The position requires compliance with U.S. export control laws.

US base salary: $160,000–$275,000 for early career, $175,000–$400,000 for mid career, or $250,000–$600,000 for senior career, plus equity.

What you will do

• Work directly with architecture, design, design verification, and formal verification engineers to identify needs and deliver tools that improve their schedules.
• Evolve the Bluespec language, type system, libraries, and mature open-source Haskell compiler.
• Build integrations connecting compiler information to simulation and formal verification, including assertions, generated checks, formal assumptions, and Rust-to-RTL reference-model flows.
• Improve debugging, editor, build, testing, and release tools for hardware development.
• Fix underlying compiler, library, and shared-flow problems and contribute appropriate fixes and features upstream.

Requirements

• Senior-level self-direction, including taking ambiguous requests from other teams through to shipped tools without close supervision.
• Strong production Haskell experience in a large codebase, including writing, debugging, and profiling; prior GHC internals knowledge is not required.
• Strong production Rust experience; hardware libraries, code generators, simulators, and reference models use Rust.
• Ability to read Bluespec, Verilog, or SystemVerilog well enough to understand compiler output and the behavior of designs, tests, or proofs.
• Experience building tools used by other engineers and adapting them based on user feedback.
• Comfort with Python, build systems, preferably Bazel, and CI.

Nice to have

• Compiler construction or verification experience through translation validation, verified compilers such as CompCert or CakeML, or systematic compiler testing and fuzzing.
• Contributions to bsc, GHC, rustc, or another production compiler.
• Experience with Bluespec BH or BSV, Chisel, Clash, or another high-level hardware language.
• Hardware verification experience with SystemVerilog Assertions, simulation testbenches, or model checking using JasperGold, VC Formal, or SymbiYosys.
• Experience with interactive theorem provers such as Isabelle/HOL, Lean, or Rocq; mechanized hardware semantics such as Kami or Koika; or semantics frameworks such as K, Sail, or Ott.
• Experience with SAT or SMT solvers inside a type checker or compiler pass.
• Experience with language servers, debuggers, waveform tools, or open-source hardware tools such as Yosys, Verilator, or SymbiYosys.
