Director, Software Engineering (Java)

Location: Hybrid role based at the HQ in San Mateo, California; required to work in the office two days per week.

Salary: $220,000–$250,000 annual U.S. base pay, with potential annual cash bonuses or commissions.

What you will do

• Own the control plane, data layer, and operational tooling supporting hirify.global services, setting architecture direction for reliability, performance, scalability, and production risk.
• Lead and grow engineering teams, including hiring, budget planning, team organization, delegation, mentoring, career development, and performance feedback.
• Own zero-downtime availability, incident response, root cause analysis, SRE process improvements, observability, automation, and customer support escalations.
• Lead the migration of legacy EC2-based services to Kubernetes and own developer self-service, on-demand environments, internal developer tooling, GitOps, and infrastructure automation.
• Own the strategy for approximately 50 MongoDB clusters and more than 60TB of data, including query and index tuning, schema reviews, sharding, replica sets, upgrades, migrations, and capacity planning.
• Drive AI adoption across the software development lifecycle, including designing, building, and deploying AI agents that improve engineering workflows and developer productivity.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience building and operating production backend systems, including enterprise SaaS or PaaS.
• 5+ years of experience leading and managing engineering teams, including on-shore and off-shore teams.
• Strong programming fundamentals, ideally in Java and/or Python, with the ability to learn new languages and stacks.
• Deep production experience with distributed systems, including debugging, profiling, capacity planning, incident response, HTTP protocols, distributed caching, and observability.
• Experience taking systems from design through production rollout and owning them after launch.
• Strong understanding of relational or NoSQL databases, including query performance, indexing, and schema design trade-offs.
• Experience being accountable for an availability SLA on a customer-facing platform.
• Hands-on experience running Kubernetes in production at scale, ideally Amazon EKS, including cluster, networking, and workload troubleshooting.
• Experience with GitOps delivery using ArgoCD and infrastructure as code using Terraform or an equivalent.
• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, containers, and CI/CD.
• Familiarity with observability tooling, including metrics, tracing, and structured logs, as well as SRE practices.
• Experience implementing continuous delivery and cloud deployment solutions.
• Experience with multi-tenant public and private clouds.
• Hands-on experience operating MongoDB or another NoSQL database at scale, including sharding, replica sets, query profiling, and index tuning.
• Agile project and release management experience.
• Evidence of accurate, fast decision-making under production pressure.
