HL7 Interoperability Architect (Healthcare)

Location: Fully remote within the continental United States; listed location Tampa, FL.

hirify.global provides technology services for a federal government healthcare modernization project supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and maintain enterprise interoperability architectures connecting VistA systems, COTS applications, and external healthcare partners.
• Define and guide implementation of HL7 v2.x, HL7 v3, CDA/C-CDA, and FHIR standards for secure healthcare information exchange.
• Ensure solutions align with the VA Technical Reference Model, One-VA Enterprise Architecture, FIPS, VA Handbook 6500, and applicable federal privacy and security requirements.
• Develop generic HL7 interfaces for Text Integration Utilities and other VistA modules.
• Participate in SDO and SRO activities, including standards reviews, ballot participation, and evaluation of emerging interoperability standards and vocabularies.
• Lead architectural documentation, including design patterns, CONOPs, interface specifications, and technical recommendations, while contributing to project milestones, risks, and coordination with the VA EPMO.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Health Informatics, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience, plus 8–10+ years of IT experience including at least 5 years focused on healthcare interoperability and HL7 standards in a large enterprise environment.
• Expert-level knowledge of HL7 v2.x messaging standards and their use in clinical data exchange and healthcare workflows.
• Extensive experience with HL7 FHIR R4/R5, CDA, and C-CDA standards and their implementation in healthcare interoperability solutions.
• Strong experience designing enterprise integration architectures and working with interface engines such as Rhapsody, Mirth Connect, or InterSystems Ensemble.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical documentation skills, including the ability to translate complex interoperability requirements into practical architectural solutions.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills for serving as a technical liaison among engineering teams, clinical stakeholders, architects, and program leadership.
• U.S. citizenship is required.
• Successful completion of a background check and the ability to obtain and maintain a Government/Public Trust clearance, including fingerprinting when required.

Nice to have

• Prior contractor experience supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA OI&T, or Veterans Health Administration.
• Experience with VistA, VistA Imaging, EHR modernization initiatives, or transitioning legacy client-server systems to modern web-based platforms.
• Knowledge of DICOM imaging integration, federal data governance, healthcare data segmentation, and privacy-related interoperability requirements.
