TL;DR
Systems Engineer, Thermal and Airflow (Thermal Systems/Food Recycling): Characterizing and improving the thermal and airflow performance of a commercial food recycler with an accent on experimental data analysis, subsystem ownership, and energy-efficient drying. Focus on analyzing temperatures, airflow, humidity, and heat transfer, updating engineering requirements, and driving hardware and control-system improvements.

Location: San Bruno, California, United States

Estimated base salary: $1,165–$195; benefits and potential equity are additional.

Company

hirify.global develops waste-prevention technology and smart systems that transform food scraps into valuable resources for homes, businesses, and municipalities.

What you will do

  • Plan experiments with test engineers and analyze temperatures, airflow, humidity, heat transfer, drying performance, energy efficiency, and throughput.
  • Own subsystems such as airflow paths, condensers, heaters, and drying chambers from requirements definition through characterization, failure-mode analysis, and design improvement.
  • Review and update the Engineering Requirements Document using test results, field data, and cross-functional input.
  • Provide system data and analysis to algorithms and firmware teams refining controls for energy use, drying time, and reliable operation.
  • Support mechanical evaluation of mixing paddles, air deflectors, and cutting or shredding components, and help define requirements for fans, blowers, heaters, sensors, and flow meters.
  • Build reusable analysis tools, plots, summaries, and test reports for cross-functional use.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of hands-on engineering experience focused on thermal, airflow or fluids, or mechanical systems; thermal testing and airflow characterization are strongly preferred, while a mechanical design background with strong test and analysis skills is also suitable.
  • Ability to analyze time-series test data and communicate findings clearly; Python is preferred, while R, MATLAB, spreadsheets, and AI-assisted analysis are acceptable.
  • Experience writing or reviewing engineering requirements, test plans, or similar technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with electromechanical components including fans, blowers, heaters, valves, and sensors.
  • BS in Mechanical, Thermal, Process, Chemical, or a related engineering field.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including presenting results to engineers across disciplines.
  • Ability to work independently on an owned area while collaborating closely with a small, fast-moving team.

Nice to have

  • Experience taking a product or process from prototype toward production.
  • Exposure to CFD or thermal simulation results and validating them against test data.
  • Startup or small-team experience in fast-paced environments.

Culture & Benefits

  • Hands-on individual contributor role on a small team.
  • Daily collaboration with Mechanical, Electrical, Algorithms, Product, test engineering, and firmware teams.
  • Benefits and a potential equity grant are offered in addition to the base salary.
