TL;DR
R&D Test Engineer - Fluid Systems (Thermofluid Systems): Developing and commissioning fluid systems for R&D test stands supporting magnet testing across liquid, gaseous, cryogenic, supercritical, and molten-salt applications with an accent on integrated system design, instrumentation, automation, and safety. Focus on analyzing and simulating components, sourcing specialized hardware, coordinating builds, and operating complex systems for SPARC and ARC.

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States; on-site

Company

hirify.global develops fusion energy systems and related R&D test infrastructure.

What you will do

  • Design fluid systems for R&D test stands supporting magnet testing and other test objectives.
  • Perform hand calculations, system-level analyses, and ANSYS structural and thermal simulations for components and assemblies.
  • Specify, size, procure, and integrate tanks, piping, pumps, valves, compressors, purification stages, circulators, and heat exchangers.
  • Manage system builds and commissioning, coordinating engineers and technicians to bring systems safely into operation.
  • Design instrumentation and automation for safe system operation.
  • Collaborate with R&D, production, procurement, SPARC, software, and operations teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, chemical, process engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 5+ years of experience engineering integrated fluid and mechanical systems, including full-lifecycle thermofluid systems.
  • Experience with system requirements, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, component sizing, instrumentation integration, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with ANSYS, COMSOL, one-dimensional compressible-flow codes, Python, and MATLAB.
  • Experience designing, building, and commissioning systems for pressurized, cryogenic, vacuum, or elevated-temperature applications.
  • Must comply with U.S. export control laws concerning controlled or protected technologies and information. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work safely around industrial hazards, including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics.

Nice to have

  • Experience with both small-scale rapid R&D systems and large-scale systems.
  • Ability to contribute to structures or materials engineering to retire risks for SPARC and ARC.
  • Experience identifying bottlenecks and improving throughput during system design, build, and commissioning.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time on-site work with occasional travel, nights, weekends, or on-call availability.
  • Competitive compensation with equity.
  • Company holidays, flexible vacation days, sick days, and parental leave.
