R&D Test Engineer - Fluid Systems

Location: Devens, MA, United States. On-site. Occasional travel, nights, weekends, and on-call work may be required.

What you will do

• Design fluid systems for R&D test stands supporting magnet testing and defined test objectives.
• Challenge requirements, perform hand calculations and system-level analyses, and develop efficient de-risking strategies.
• Build and run ANSYS structural and thermal simulations for components and assemblies.
• Source off-the-shelf components, manage specialized vendors, draft technical specifications, and design custom fluid-system components.
• Manage system builds and commissioning, coordinating engineers and technicians to bring systems safely into operation.
• Design instrumentation and automation for safe system operation and collaborate with R&D, production, procurement, SPARC, software, and operations teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, process engineering, or a closely related field.
• 5+ years of experience engineering integrated fluid/mechanical systems, including hands-on execution of the full lifecycle of large-scale thermofluid systems.
• Experience with tanks, process piping, pumps, valves, compressors, purification stages, circulators, heat exchangers, and related components, including specification, sizing, and integration.
• Strong experience establishing system requirements, creating process flow diagrams, and developing piping and instrumentation diagrams.
• Experience designing, integrating, and troubleshooting system instrumentation.
• Experience using ANSYS, COMSOL, 1D compressible-flow codes, Python, and MATLAB.
• Practical experience designing, building, and commissioning fluid systems for pressurized, cryogenic, vacuum, and/or elevated-temperature applications.
• Experience sourcing complex components, preparing technical specifications, and managing specialized vendors and suppliers.
• Ability to communicate complex fluid-system details to non-experts and interfacing teams, challenge assumptions, make efficient technical decisions, and develop solutions under tight timelines.
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs and perform extended periods of stooping, climbing, typing, standing, or sitting.
• Dedication to safety when working around heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics.
• Willingness to travel or work occasional required nights, weekends, and on-call shifts.

Nice to have

• Experience with both small-scale rapid R&D systems and large-scale systems.
• Ability to work across adjacent engineering disciplines such as structures or materials to retire risks for SPARC and ARC.
• Strong aptitude for identifying bottlenecks and improving throughput during system design, build, and commissioning operations.
