Senior Software Engineer, Platform (AI)

Location: Portland, Oregon, United States; full-time hybrid. Visa sponsorship is not available. Right-to-work and background checks are required.

Salary: $132,300–$161,700 per year.

What you will do

• Own the reliability, performance, scalability, observability, and operational quality of production systems.
• Lead database migrations and rearchitecture projects from planning and risk assessment through cutover, minimizing customer disruption.
• Scale infrastructure, cloud data platforms, and creative data processing pipelines for higher data volumes and throughput.
• Build self-service tools and automation for engineering deployment, testing, debugging, and operational workflows.
• Maintain staging and development environments, deployment automation, and testing infrastructure; improve monitoring and alerting with AI-assisted workflows.
• Respond to production incidents, lead post-incident reviews, collaborate with Information Security and Product, and set and meet platform reliability and performance targets.

Requirements

• Experience leading a database migration or significant architectural change on a live production system.
• Deep, hands-on experience with cloud data platforms in production, including performance tuning and query optimization.
• A track record of scaling existing web applications and their infrastructure, with strong experience in observability, monitoring, and alerting.
• Ability to read and write production code, ideally in Ruby on Rails.
• Daily use of AI tools such as Claude to build workflows and automation, beyond using them as a search engine.
• Clear communication skills, including explaining technical trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences and writing usable documentation.
• Experience with a major cloud platform such as AWS or DigitalOcean, infrastructure as code such as Ansible, and Datadog or similar monitoring tools.
• Within the first 90 days, ability to understand the production architecture, data layer, and deployment pipeline, ship production improvements, plan a major database migration or rearchitecture with risks and rollback, and deliver a reliability or observability improvement.
• Within one year, ability to complete a major database migration or rearchitecture without unplanned customer-facing downtime, improve data throughput and reliability, and deliver self-service tooling used by engineers.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-volume data or media pipelines.
• Experience building internal developer platforms or self-service tooling.
• Experience working within a formal information security program.
