Senior Forward Deployed Engineer, AWS Forward Deployed Engineering (AI)

Location: Australia, New South Wales or Victoria; Sydney or Melbourne. Requires 30–50% travel and embedding directly with strategic enterprise customers.

What you will do

• Lead technical strategy and execution across complex, multi-workstream customer AI programs, making architecture decisions across services and organizational boundaries.
• Design, build, deploy, and operate enterprise-scale AI systems, including multi-agent orchestration, enterprise retrieval systems, and decision intelligence platforms.
• Define operational standards, evaluation frameworks, testing strategies, observability standards, incident response playbooks, and production readiness criteria.
• Develop reusable architectures, engineering patterns, accelerators, and platforms that reduce customer AI time-to-value.
• Contribute to interviews and hiring, mentor junior Forward Deployed Engineers, and coach engineers on system design, customer engagement, and production operations.
• Identify opportunities to expand AI adoption across customer organizations and feed learnings back into AWS services and the Forward Deployed Engineering practice.

Requirements

• 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
• 5+ years of programming experience with at least one software programming language.
• 5+ years of experience leading the design or architecture of new and existing systems, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling.
• Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or engineering team lead.
• Experience communicating technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences, including senior stakeholders.
• Experience leading agentic and spec-driven development at production scale.
• Experience with AI tools, including evaluation frameworks, agent tooling, RAG pipelines, and prompt engineering.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent.
• Experience working with AWS services and building or deploying AI/ML applications at enterprise production scale.
• Background as a founder, engineering lead, or startup builder with high ownership and urgency.
• Experience architecting and delivering complex, multi-component systems in customer production environments.
• Experience with React, TypeScript, Python, and/or Go.
• Experience leading customer-facing technical projects or managing external stakeholder relationships.
• 3+ years of experience in an Agile, startup, or rapidly scaling environment.
