AI Product Engineers (AI)

Location: Hybrid, Sydney, Australia; fully flexible working arrangements with access to an office in Redfern. Current and unrestricted Australian working rights are required; visa sponsorship is not available.

hirify.global builds machine-learning-powered, physics-enabled digital twins of electricity grids to help utilities assess infrastructure risks, optimize investments, and plan for extreme weather and structural stress.

What you will do

• Design, prototype, and ship AI-powered product features end to end, from utility-engineer problems to production software.
• Build agentic and retrieval-based systems grounded in the digital twin, simulation outputs, internal expression language, and network data.
• Design guardrails, refusals, confidence signals, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints for trustworthy AI outputs in safety-critical infrastructure.
• Build evaluation and observability practices, including evaluation sets, regression testing, offline and online quality signals, prompt and context versioning, and cost and latency budgets.
• Work with power systems and GIS specialists, Product, Design, customer-facing teams, and utility customers to validate and iterate on product features.
• Help establish engineering standards for AI development, including the use of coding agents.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience building and shipping production software, with strong depth in backend or full-stack product engineering.
• Experience shipping AI features to paying customers in a commercial product and owning them after launch, including understanding users, scale, and business impact.
• Hands-on experience with retrieval, context engineering, tool use, agent orchestration, structured output, and prompt design.
• Experience designing and implementing an AI evaluation approach, including what it detected and missed.
• Sound judgment about appropriate AI use and the ability to design for failure modes rather than only successful scenarios.
• Strong product sense and comfort working directly with users and product teams, including expert users.
• Current and unrestricted working rights in Australia are required.

Nice to have

• Experience shipping software into regulated or enterprise environments, including data residency, auditability, private deployments, and security reviews.
• Background in geospatial, 3D, CAD, simulation, or other engineering software.
• Experience with TypeScript, React, Python, Java, Dart, or Rust; exact stack experience is not required.
• Strong use of AI coding tools in day-to-day work.
• Utilities, energy, or critical infrastructure domain knowledge.
