Software Engineer (Backend) - Galway

Location: Galway, Ireland; hybrid with an average requirement of 2 days per week from an HPE office

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support backend features and services from concept through production.
• Build secure, scalable cloud-based applications, integrations, microservices, and RESTful APIs.
• Develop clean, maintainable, and well-tested software and contribute to technical design decisions.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, participate in code reviews, and share technical knowledge.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, deploy, and improve services operating in a 24/7 production environment.
• Work with CI/CD pipelines, Docker, Kubernetes, reliability practices, and platform security.

Requirements

• Commercial backend development experience with Go, Python, Java, or a similar programming language.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals, clean-code principles, testing methodologies, software design patterns, and TDD.
• Experience designing maintainable services and components with clear interfaces and working through the full software development lifecycle in Agile environments.
• Experience building microservices and RESTful APIs, with knowledge of distributed systems, scalability, resilience, availability, and fault tolerance.
• Experience with public cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform, plus asynchronous messaging, event-driven architectures, and integration patterns.
• Experience developing and supporting applications in Linux environments and operating cloud-hosted production services.
• Knowledge of CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code approaches, secure API design, authentication, authorization, and secrets management.
• Strong communication, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and collaborate effectively.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools responsibly and effectively, eagerness to learn, and a collaborative knowledge-sharing mindset.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience; typically 4–6 years of professional software engineering experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with reactive systems, concurrent programming, or stream processing.
• Messaging platforms such as Kafka, NATS, or similar technologies, and distributed messaging and transaction patterns.
• Kubernetes deployment strategies, GitOps practices, Terraform, Helm, Ansible, or related automation tools.
