Senior Software Engineer (Network Automation)

Location: Hybrid; presence required 4 days per week at the Bellevue or San Francisco office. Lambda's designated work-from-home day is Tuesday.

Annual salary: $284K–$378K.

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate software automating the network lifecycle from data center build-out and device provisioning through day-2 operations.
• Build zero-touch provisioning and deployment systems for GPU-cluster network devices.
• Develop network configuration-as-code pipelines with automated testing, staged rollouts, and safe rollback.
• Build capacity-planning tools using inventory, topology, utilization, and time-series data to forecast infrastructure needs.
• Integrate automation with source-of-truth, inventory, and IPAM systems, and create APIs, services, and CLIs for internal network-resource management.
• Instrument owned systems with metrics, logging, and alerting; collaborate with Network Engineering, Data Center Operations, and platform teams; participate in on-call rotation.

Requirements

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Production-quality coding skills and deep expertise in multiple programming languages.
• Experience building automation or infrastructure tooling used by other engineers, such as provisioning systems, deployment pipelines, workflow engines, or internal APIs.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems design, including API design, data modeling, idempotency, and handling partial failures.
• Experience with code review, automated testing, CI/CD, and Git-based workflows.
• Comfort with the Linux command line and understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and IP routing.
• Experience leading technical projects end to end, from design documentation through production rollout, and mentoring engineers.
• Clear communication with software engineering, network engineering, and operations teams, including translating operational pain points into software requirements.

Nice to have

• Networking experience, including data center networks, Clos/spine-leaf fabrics, BGP, EVPN/VXLAN, or ECMP.
• Experience automating Arista, Juniper, Cisco, or NVIDIA Cumulus/SONiC devices through APIs, NETCONF/gNMI, or Jinja templating.
• Familiarity with Ansible, Nornir, Netmiko, NAPALM, or Terraform.
• Experience with network source-of-truth, DCIM, or IPAM systems.
• Experience building capacity-planning or forecasting tools or working with large volumes of time-series telemetry.
• Familiarity with HPC/AI networking, including InfiniBand or RoCEv2 at GPU-cluster scale; Kubernetes service operations; and data center power, space, and cooling constraints.
